Flexography Label Printing is a technique of direct rotary printing that uses a flexible polymer printing plate that is attached to a plate cylinder. Flexography Printing uses an anilox roll to bring ink to the plate. A metering roll or doctor blade system is used to remove excess ink from the anilox roll prior to applying ink to the plate. The plate then prints directly on the material being used. Flexography uses fast drying, low viscosity, solvents, water based inks, and UV curable inks. Die cutting takes place in-line, using a rotary cutting die after the printing and any varnish or overlaminates are applied.

Flexography is the fastest growing conventional label printing process due in part to major improvements in plate material and the plate making process as well as improvements to inks. Flexographic printing is the main choice of label printing in the packaging industry for process printing as well as spot colors on a wide variety of materials from board stock to pressure sensitive label stock. Because of its versatility, flexographic printing is used for a wide range of products from boxes to bags, but the label industry uses flexographic printing almost exclusively.
The label companies industry uses flexography for manufacturing all types of printed labels from blank labels for thermal transfer printing, to eye-catching four color process printed product labels, and everything in between. Four color process uses screen patterns of yellow, magenta, cyan, and black that are printed on top of each other to produce a full range of colors as well as photographic images. Spot printing uses a specific color or colors to produce a printed image.
Other methods of printing are available to the packaging industry. Due to the speed, versatility and cost, flexographic label printing is still the best mode of printing in the label industry.
